What is exported

Coimbatore, Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Kolkata make submersible, monoblock and industrial pumps. Farm and domestic pumps sell to distributors in Africa, the Gulf and South-East Asia; industrial pumps and parts go to the USA and Europe. In 2025-26 India exported about US$ 1.6 billion under HS 8413; the USA led, followed by Germany, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Varieties, grades and forms

  • Submersible borewell pumpsFor farms and homes; Coimbatore and Rajkot are the main makers.
  • Monoblock and centrifugal pumpsSurface pumps for irrigation and water supply.
  • Industrial process pumpsChemical, slurry, boiler-feed and split-casing pumps built to order.
  • Solar pumpsSolar-powered irrigation pumps for Africa and South Asia.
  • Hand pumps and pump partsIndia Mark II-type hand pumps and spare impellers, casings and shafts.

Where it is grown or made

  • Tamil NaduCoimbatore — India's largest pump and motor cluster
  • GujaratRajkot and Ahmedabad — submersible and monoblock pumps
  • MaharashtraKolhapur, Pune and Mumbai — industrial pumps
  • West BengalKolkata–Howrah — hand pumps and castings

Export packing

  • Each pump is packed in a strong carton or wooden box with foam or thermocol supports; outlets are capped to keep dirt out.
  • Large pumps ship on skids or in ISPM-15 crates with lifting points marked.
  • Every box carries a rating plate copy, manual, model number and serial number; EU buyers need CE marking and a declaration of conformity.

Who buys abroad

  • Pump distributors and dealers
  • Irrigation and water-supply contractors
  • Government and donor-funded tenders (rural water, solar irrigation)
  • Machinery and plant makers (OEMs)

The quality buyers ask for

Performance test
Head, flow, power and efficiency tested to ISO 9906 (acceptance grade agreed with the buyer)
Indian standards
IS 8034 (submersible pumpsets), IS 9079 (monoset pumps), IS 14220 (openwell submersible) — Indian buyers' baseline; many importers in Africa and Asia accept BIS-marked pumps
EU efficiency
Clean-water pumps covered by Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 547/2012 must meet a minimum efficiency index (MEI)
Motor
Motor efficiency class (IEC 60034-30-1, IE2/IE3), voltage and frequency (50 or 60 Hz) of the target market
Materials
Casing, impeller and shaft materials (cast iron, bronze, stainless steel grades) and drinking-water approval where needed
Pressure and leakage
Hydrostatic test of the casing and seal leakage check

Certificates

  • CE marking (Machinery, Low Voltage and EMC)RequiredRequired for pumps sold in the EU. The Machinery Directive is being replaced by Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which applies from 20 January 2027.
  • ISO 9001Often askedBasic quality system expected by distributors and project buyers.
  • UL / CSAOften askedElectrical safety listing for pumps sold in the USA and Canada (UL 778 for motor-operated water pumps).
  • NSF/ANSI 61 or WRASOften askedDrinking-water contact approval for the USA (NSF 61) or the UK (WRAS).
  • BIS certification (IS 8034 etc.)Often askedNeeded to sell these pumps in India; also a quality signal to many developing-country buyers.
  • Pre-shipment conformity (destination schemes)Often askedSeveral African and Gulf countries require a certificate of conformity from an appointed inspection body before shipment.

Shipping, storage and shelf life

Container load

Pumps go in individual cartons or wooden crates (ISPM-15) on pallets; a 20-ft container holds about 10 standard pallets on the floor. Heavy industrial pumps reach the weight limit first.

How it travels

Sea freight; air for urgent spares.

Storage

Keep dry, plug openings, protect shafts and seals; rotate shafts of stored pumps periodically.

What goes on the pack and carton

  • Rating plate: model, serial number, flow, head, power, voltage, frequency, IP rating and year.
  • EU: CE mark, manufacturer and importer name and address, MEI value for Ecodesign-covered pumps, and the instructions in the local language.
  • Country of origin and the pump curve or data sheet in the manual.
Where to get it tested

The Fluid Control Research Institute (FCRI), Palakkad, tests pumps and flow equipment. BIS-recognised labs test pumps to Indian standards (see the BIS laboratory list). For CE and UL testing, use the certification body's Indian lab or an NABL-accredited electrical lab (search 'electrical' in the NABL directory).

Benefits of exporting this product

Where to register

  • EEPC India"Pumps – all types" are listed under EEPC in Appendix 2T.eepcindia.org ↗

Quality and checks

  • EU: CE marking under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (replaced by the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027), plus low-voltage and EMC rules for motor-pumps and ecodesign rules for water pumps.
  • USA and Canada: electrical safety listing (for example UL or CSA) for motor-pumps; drinking-water pumps may need NSF/ANSI 61 certification.
  • Performance test certificate (head, flow, efficiency) for each model.
How to start small

Farm and domestic pumps for Africa and the Gulf are the usual entry point. Choose models with good test data, offer spare parts and a warranty, join EEPC, and appoint one distributor per country. Ship a mixed first container on advance or LC terms.

Where new exporters go wrong

  • Wrong voltage or frequency for the destination (for example 60 Hz in the Americas and Saudi Arabia).
  • No spare-parts and service plan; distributors drop brands they cannot repair.
  • Shipping a SCOMET-listed pump without a licence — a serious offence.

Step by step

How to export pumps

India is a significant pump maker, with strong clusters in Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Kolkata, and exports agricultural, domestic, industrial and solar pumps. The largest exporters are China, Germany, the USA, Italy and Denmark, with China dominating low-cost pumps and Europe the high-efficiency end. Demand comes from irrigation in Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia, from water and wastewater projects, and from solar pumping. Openings are in submersible and monoblock pumps for developing markets, solar pump sets, and spare parts and castings for European pump makers.

  1. 01Pick market and models

Match voltage, frequency and standards of the target market.

  2. 02Certify

Get CE, UL or destination conformity as the market requires.

  3. 03Find distributors

Appoint distributors who can stock spares and offer service.

  4. 04Produce and test each pump

Run every pump on the test bed and record results.

  5. 05Pack and document

Crate, label and prepare test certificates and manuals.

  6. 06Ship and claim

File the shipping bill, claim RoDTEP and drawback.

  7. 07Payment and support

Use LC for new markets; keep spares stock and warranty terms clear.

Questions

Questions about exporting pumps

Do I need CE for pumps sold to Africa?
Not by law, but many African buyers trust CE or BIS marks. Some countries run pre-shipment conformity schemes — check before shipping.
What is MEI?
The Minimum Efficiency Index for clean-water pumps under EU Ecodesign rules; the higher, the better. Pumps below the minimum cannot be sold in the EU.
50 Hz or 60 Hz?
India, Europe and most of Africa use 50 Hz; the USA, parts of Latin America and Saudi Arabia use 60 Hz. A pump made for 50 Hz runs faster and draws more power on 60 Hz.
Can I export solar pumps?
Yes. Check the destination's standards for panels and controllers, and include clear sizing and installation guides.
Which council covers pumps?
EEPC India.
