German buyers purchase Indian machinery parts, chemicals, garments, leather, footwear and organic food. They are loyal once satisfied but expect exact specifications, test reports and on-time delivery. German law also makes large companies check human-rights and environmental risks in their supply chain, so expect questionnaires.

India–EU Free Trade Agreement (concluded, not yet in force)

Germany trades with India under EU rules. The India–EU FTA was concluded on 27 January 2026; signing was expected by December 2026 and entry into force around early 2027, according to the Commerce Minister (June 2026). Labour-intensive goods such as garments, leather, footwear and textiles are among the biggest gainers once it applies. Confirm current status on commerce.gov.in.

What it buys from India

  • Machinery, electrical equipment and auto components
  • Organic and inorganic chemicals, medicines
  • Garments, home textiles, leather goods and footwear
  • Coffee, tea, spices and organic food

Import rules on their side

  • All EU rules apply: MRLs for food, CE marking for machinery and electrical goods, REACH for chemicals in products, and CBAM data for steel and aluminium goods.
  • Leather goods, coffee and wood products come under the EU deforestation rule (EUDR) from 30 December 2026 for large and medium importers.
  • Textiles and leather are tested for banned dyes (azo dyes), chromium VI and other restricted substances.
  • Organic food must be certified by a body recognised by the EU; check the EU and APEDA lists before signing a contract.

Practical tips

  • Trade fairs are central in Germany: Anuga (food, Cologne), BIOFACH (organic, Nuremberg), Ambiente and Heimtextil (homeware and textiles, Frankfurt).
  • Send a full technical file — drawings, material certificates, test reports — with your first quotation.
  • Keep delivery promises. A late first shipment usually ends the relationship.
